If you have sensitive teeth, then you’ll want to hear about this new dental research. Scientists are working on a new biomaterial that can decrease sensitivity and rebuild enamel. The journal ACS Nano published the details of the first tests of this new material. It’s a paste that is composed of elements already found in your teeth, namely calcium and phosphate. The paste works by closing up tubes that are remnants of degraded enamel; these tubes expose underlying nerves to things like heat or cold and cause pain or discomfort. Dogs were the first to try out this desensitizing material, and it’s been a successful first step! This research could be used to further studies of how to rebuild enamel completely.
